Original Drabble:
Day Five - Unexpected snowfall in the spring
“Is this seriously happening?” Sarah pulled back the curtain, eyes wide, as she saw the scene unfolding outside.
“It is.” Amelia stood next to her, snapping photos, a small flutter of excitement in the pit of her stomach.
It was May 1st. And it was snowing. Not just a simple dusting, either. Measurable snow.
Sarah grumbled as she searched for her winter coat in the closet. “I cannot believe I am seriously having to dig this thing out. Where the hell are my boots?” Amelia continued to half listen to Sarah’s ramblings as she stared at the new fallen snow.
“…have to clean off my windshield…hope the car actually starts…of course you don’t have to work today…”
Finally bundled up and ready, Sarah grabbed her keys from where they hung by the door, and stormed out. Amelia just shook her head. She wasn’t naïve. She knew that this weather wasn’t going to be welcomed by the townspeople in general. As the day wore on she could see people shoveling, as she walked down to the corner store around lunchtime she heard them griping because it was May, for chrissakes, and it was Iowa, and it shouldn’t be snowing anymore, and boy, was everyone ready for spring!
Amelia didn’t participate in the rants. She gave her half smiles if she ran into someone who made note of the weather, laughed along with them at the craziness of it all.
And when Sarah returned home later that day, moaning about how the plows had pushed all the snow up on her car as they passed by and it took her a half hour to brush it all away and dig her tires out of it, Amelia simply nodded her head and listened in sympathy.
Later that night, however, after she’d retired to bed, Amelia pulled out a letter from her bottom drawer.
My love,
I hope this letter finds you well. Things are going good here. My job is taking off and I’m starting to get the money together that we need.
I have some good news. I think I have found a place for us. It’s not very big, but then again, we don’t need anything too huge, do we? Just a cozy little place for the two of us to hide away in on those snowy nights is more than enough for me.
Amelia shivered happily at the thought. It had become a running joke between them – every year when she would go to meet up with him, it would always be snowing. Didn’t matter that it was late April or early May…it was also the mountains of Colorado, and Mother Nature was always rather late in bringing spring to that part of the country.
Anyway, I can show you our new place this weekend when you visit. I cannot wait to see you again, my darling. A year is too long between visits.
All my love,
Christopher
Amelia looked out her bedroom window. The snow had long ago stopped falling, now it simply covered the ground, sparkling as the moonlight shone down on it.
Christopher was going to love this story.
"Community" Drabble:
Day Six - People have been staring at your character all day and they can't figure out why.
Britta frowned.
Something was wrong.
She was used to being joked about, made fun of. Normally, she shrugged it off. Yeah, she was a little weird, but who wasn’t? She’d rather be an individual than one of the sheep who happily conform to everything, anyway…
…and there was Jeff’s voice telling her to shut up. You shut up, Jeff.
Anyway, normally the looks didn’t bother her. But today? Today they were even more pointed than usual. Eyes grew as wide as saucers when she passed by, there were loud yet unintelligible whispers…even a jaw dropped here and there.
What was going on?
Britta ran to the ladies’ room, double checking herself. Her hair looked fine. There weren’t any stains on her clothes. No food stuck in her teeth. She didn’t have a few squares of toilet paper sticking out of her shoe, or a “Kick me” sign placed anywhere.
So what the hell was the big deal?
Finally, she stepped out, only to run smack dab into Jeff. He immediately grabbed her arm and pulled her away to a quiet corner of the school.
“Whoa, Jeff, slow down, where’s the fire?” Britta asked impatiently.
“Thank god I found you. I’ve been worried sick!”
Britta’s eyebrows shot up. “You have? Why?”
Jeff looked at her in amazement. “You don’t know?”
“No…?” She paused. “Wait. Does this have something to do with why everyone’s been staring at me all day?”
“Uh, yeah!”
“Jeff, just tell me what’s going on already.” She folded her arms, waiting for an explanation.
“Okay…don’t freak out…but…” Jeff looked around quickly before leaning in and whispering. “There are clones of us here. Evil clones.”
Britta stared blankly at Jeff. “Have you lost your mind?” she finally asked.
“No! I didn’t believe it either, at first, but then Abed started talking about that darkest timeline stuff and his evil clone is apparently running around trying to conspire to take over Greendale.”
“Did you see this happen?”
“Well, no, but…”
“So again I ask: have you lost your mind?”
“Britta, please! You have to believe me! The other students are going to tear you apart! They think we’re the evil clones!”
“What on earth would make them think that?”
“Because the evil clones look too obviously evil for people to believe they’re evil. They think we’re secretly the bad guys and we’re just putting on an innocent front.”
“…uh-huh…” Britta said slowly, backing away from her friend. “Yeah. That’s great. You just go ahead and talk to Abed about that, and I’m just going to pretend this conversation never happened.” She turned and dashed down the corner.
“Britta? BRITTA! Damnit!” Jeff exclaimed, banging his hand against the wall. He went back off in search of Abed.
Meanwhile, Britta was moving quickly down the hall, glancing back behind her every couple steps or so. She rounded another corner, only to find a familiar face.
“Annie! Oh, thank god! I need your help. It’s about Jeff.”
Annie slowly came towards Britta, and Britta’s stomach began to drop at her friend’s creepy smile.
Then everything went black.
